Large Container Vessel Named at Odense Steel Shipyard (CARSTEN MÆRSK)
On Saturday 28 October 2000, a new vessel in the series of large post-panamax container vessels, built by Odense Steel Shipyard A/S for A.P. Møller, was named at a festive ceremony at Odense Steel Shipyard. The new vessel no. 179 was named by Ms Marianne Jelved, Minister of Economic Affairs and Nordic Co-operation, who was accompanied by her husband, Mr Jan Jelved, and her closest relatives.

The vessel has a length of 347 metres, a width of 43 metres and a capacity of 6,600 TEU (twenty-foot containers) of which more than 700 are forty-foot refrigerated containers.

Mid November, CARSTEN MÆRSK and 13 of its sisters will be part of Maersk Sealand's service between Europe, the Far East and the USA's West Coast. On this service, a voyage takes only 13 weeks as the vessel from Hong Kong continues directly to the USA's West Coast. From here, the vessel will return to the Far East and then continue to Europe. Thus CARSTEN MÆRSK is going to call at about 80 ports and cover around 150,000 sea miles corresponding to 275,000 kilometres a year or seven times round the world.

CARSTEN MÆRSK and its 15 men crew is commanded by Captain Jens Christian Christiansen, Vester Aaby near Faaborg, with Arne Stokholm Bøgelund Nielsen, Veggerslev near Grenå, as Chief Engineer. The vessel will be registered at Kerteminde.
